As awards season starts to gallop towards us I getting prickly about a certain category.
Is it not reverse feminism to have a ‘Best Woman in IT’ or similar award? Don’t get me wrong I shave my legs and my armpits, I like having my dinner paid for and the door being held open for me – it makes me feel delicate don’t you know. Not easy when you top 6ft (in heels).
But I don’t see the need for a separate award for women. Many of my clients are women and are self starters who have built their businesses using their determination and inner diva, not thanks to special funding or recognition that they are a woman in a man’s world.
Now I’m not saying that the odd bit of cleavage wasn’t flashed, you’ve got to use what you’ve got, but let’s get a grip here. We complain about glass ceilings for women and how they are treated differently to men, and then we contradict ourselves by fuelling Women in IT awards by entering them.
Surely, Best IT Director covers off all bases nicely? After all if you’re good at your job, it doesn’t matter whether your male, female, gorilla or ferret.
