Rejecting the new English dialect

Is it just me who felt a tad uncomfortable reading the news that UK councils have been asked to cut back on inter-department superfluous jargon?

I positively cringed as the BBC correctly translated that a ‘coterminous, stakeholder engagement’ was, in fact, a pompously-inflated-polysyllabic euphemism for ‘having a chat…’

Here are some of the worst offenders:

  • Benchmarking
  • Bleeding-edge
  • Blue-sky
  • Diarise
  • Futureproof
  • Going forwards/moving forward
  • Leverage
  • Liaise
  • Thinking outside the box
  • Ubiquitous
  • Utilise
  • World-leading

Dave Fleet also has a fantastic list of his top 10 most irritating phrases in PR.
