Speed launches PR Eats service

If like me you’re regularly asking your colleagues, friends or Twitter followers for recommendations of places to eat and drink, then you’ll love a new Facebook page that we’ve set up today. PR Eats is a one stop shop for finding fantastic bars, restaurants and cafes in London. You can search for great places near by specific locations, such as the FT’s office, and of course you can nominate places where you have had a great lunch, dinner or drinking session.

Take a look at the page now and let us know which places you think are fantastic -  http://on.fb.me/dFzmkv

And of course, feel free to follow us on Twitter. We’re @PR_Eats!

In the summer time….

Whilst it’s been lovely to have a summer for once, I have to admit there are a few things I am actually missing with all this hot weather.  Here are my top five quibbles with the summer sun:

  1. I’d really like to have a bath – but it’s just too hot so cold showers it is
  2. I’d love to sit down and enjoy a great British cuppa – but it’s too hot so a glass of cold squash it is
  3. I’d like to be able to sleep under the duvet but no, it’s too hot
  4. I want a roast dinner but no, another BBQ it is
  5. I’d like to go to bed when it’s really dark, not half light

And with the hot weather set to continue for the rest of the week, it looks like I’ll have to continue my toenail maintenance for a while longer!

Free coffee and a little bit of vote rigging

I love Tossed – lots of delicious salads, soups, wraps and stews that have at one point or another helped most of the Speed contingent through a bleak lunchtime when another Pret sandwich simply won’t cut it.

In fact, I love it so much that I went online and joined its email newsletter database – and perhaps more to the point, I’ve actually stuck with it. Its humorous tone and snappy content means it’s a welcome arrival in my inbox and more to the point, its quite good at giving away free stuff. Not that I’m cheap or anything.

It seems that others share my love of Tossed as it has been nominated as a finalist in the food and drink category of Metro’s Venture Candy Awards. To help the company clinch the title, they have emailed their database offering a free coffee for anyone who can prove they’ve voted for them.

I’m slightly dubious about the morality behind essentially bribing your way to first place but I guess if Gordon Brown et al have taught us anything, it’s that sometimes you’ve got to whatever it takes to win.

Now, where’s my free coffee…

We all scream for ice cream!

Those pesky people at Ben & Jerry’s are attempting to traumatise those of us who are desperately trying to get their body bikini-ready at some point this summer by touting their wares FOR FREE across the UK today with their Fair Cone Day.

Yes, their Caramel Chew Chew is work of the ice cream gods and yes, it makes me want to cry tears of joy with every spoonful but it certainly isn’t going to make my arse look any less like two bags of porridge and any more like JLos.

As a grown woman I would love to be able to have mastered the art of self control but unfortunately, when it comes to pleasures of the gastronomic kind, I am at a lost (apart from mushrooms, bleaugh, you can keep your dirty mushrooms). Being based in Leicester Square the Ben & Jerry’s shop is a mere stones throw away. I’ve noted that the queue isn’t that long…that there’s still plenty of ice cream to go around…that the people look so happy as they leave with their cones-of-delight….!

But then I remember what happened last time I went on hols without any kind of abstention from pie, and from what I didn’t manage to block from memory, it wasn’t pretty and no amount of tanning was going to make that blubber-like substance ‘normal’.

And so the ongoing internal battle continues. Well, until 5pm at least when the offer ends…wish me luck!

Curly Wurlys & a cuppa . . .

What do we ladies love . . . shopping and chocolate?

Now we can combine the two, as Cadbury is set to introduce a national chain of cafés to Britain’s high-streets.  The branded cafés called ‘Cadbury Cocoa House’ will sell the company’s selection of chocolates, confectionary, as well as the brands range of hot chocolates. With plans to open 60 stores in the UK across major cities and towns, we’ll soon be able to rest our tired tootsies after pounding the high-street with a ‘glass-and-a-half’ of cocoa deliciousness!

This is the first time that the company has directly competed in the coffee shop marketplace, a fiercely competitive market with the likes of Starbucks and Coffee Republic to name but a few. Despite the stiff competition, this could be a clever move as the coffee shop sector has proven to be incredibly resilient throughout the recession. Whilst other high-street stores were permanently dropping their shutters, some coffee chains were in fact expanding as consumers refused to give up their daily dose of caffeine.

Despite the recent hostile takeover by US giant Kraft, Cadbury will still position itself as a proud British brand, and what could be more quintessentially British than afternoon tea – which will be served in all café’s.

Gordon Ramsay, SEO and Valentine’s Day

I vividly remember watching Gordon Ramsay spell out the basics to yet another hapless restaurateur. Between the expletives the point was clear – it wasn’t just about the f**ing food, it was about keeping the restaurant full and operating cost-effectively.

After Valentine’s Day I’d add another point – it’s about the Search Engine Optimisation. I was aware that a new restaurant had opened in nearby Bury St Edmunds (my nearest and dearest had told me), but couldn’t remember the name. Not wanting to give away my plans (or admit to not listening fully) I thought a quick web search would deliver a name or number.

Wrong. Even though the restaurant had a website, searching for Bury St Edmunds restaurants failed to turn it up. Eventually I got a number by cheekily calling a nearby pub for the restaurant name, but it was a time-consuming process. A less determined diner would have gone elsewhere and missed out on what was a very good and inventive meal. So time for restaurants to realise that simply sticking up a website is not enough – you need to plug it into what people are searching for if you want visitors.
