Microsoft is preparing to launch its latest weapon in its ongoing battle with Google. The software giant will launch its flagship product Office 2010 to businesses on 12 May. The latest version of the software has a free online component – called Office Web Apps.

Twitter was hit by a bug last night that saw high profile tweeters forced into following users. It claimed that the bug permitted a user to ‘force’ other users to follow them and those who typed ‘accept’ followed by a person’s Twitter name forced the user to be added to their list of followers.

In the wake of economic turmoil, the UK ranks sixth in the world in IT competitiveness, according to study released by the Economist Intelligence Unit and sponsored by the Business Software Alliance (BSA). The study, now in its third year, surveys the IT industry environments of 66 economies to discover the extent to which they enable IT sector competitiveness. The UK scored a 70.2 out of a possible 100 in the index, a figure that pushed the country down three places from 2008.

It shows that more than four out of five (83%) respondents identified business intelligence and analytics, as the way they will enhance their organisations’ competitiveness.

IBM, working with researchers in Europe, claims to have developed a better way to search online for photos and videos than current methods used by Google and Yahoo.

Silicon.com – Businesses to get hands on Windows 7 in September
Day 1 of Microsoft’s partner conference the software giant announced businesses will get access to Windows 7 earlier. The company said business customers will be able to get Windows 7 ahead of its 22 October retail launch, though they won’t be able to get it immediately after the code is finalised. Microsoft said businesses will be able to order Windows 7 from volume licensing partners as of 1 September.

The Guardian – Microsoft starts to unveil Office 2010, but it’s still perhaps a year away
Microsoft started to publicise details of Microsoft Office 2010, at its Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans today. The main news is that Microsoft Office 2010, SharePoint Server 2010, Visio 2010 and Project 2010 “have reached the technical preview engineering milestone”. These are pre-beta versions, not suitable for production use. There should be a public beta later this year, with the final release “in the first half of 2010
