If you were to ask my colleagues and friends the type of people I tend to idolise, there will probably be an even split in responses between organic farmers and Ray Mears.

I have become quite adept at stalking organic farmers at various markets up and down the country; however tracking down Ray Mears has been more of a challenge. A couple of weeks ago I found the king of bushcraft at the Outdoors Show and attended one of his lectures.

The lecture was, for me, fascinating. However one thing that really stuck in my mind was one of Ray’s trips to the Arctic where, despite still retaining their hunter/gather skills, the indigenous people had access to a high-speed Wi-Fi network, Playstations and other technology you wouldn’t necessarily associate with living in the Arctic wilderness.

There were of course gasps and shaking of heads in the lecture theatre. Especially as the Wi-Fi was provided by an oil company that had set up shop nearby. While this was undoubtedly a bit of CSR by the oil company, it has had a profound effect on the local community.

Vital supplies can now be ordered over the internet, emergency services can be accessed but perhaps more interestingly a world of information can be found. While these are positives, I imagine the gasps and disapproving whispers upon hearing this news was due to the belief that the key skills used by the local population for centuries, would be lost in a sea of World of Warcraft and tweeting.

Or will they? As the local community becomes more proficient in finding and perhaps adding to information on the web, will we see those that retain the ancient skills post Wikis for all to learn from? Could a geo location map be uploaded highlighting the key hunting areas for other local communities? Perhaps an online charter of how to make sustainable use of the land and its resources could be drafted and adhered to.

Personally, I do get a warm feeling when hearing about the more traditional way of handing down knowledge from father/mother (no Andy Gray here) to son/daughter. However, access to the online world could help those living the more ‘pure’ life cement their legacy and teachings online. And perhaps teach the rest of the world something in the process. I’d love to learn from them and I’m sure others would too.

This week, Marie Efthymiou (phonetic spelling available on request) entertains us with holiday anecdotes and suggestions as to how one might explain ‘PR’ to a four year old.

You’ve just got back from your holiday. Where did you go?

I had the most amazing two weeks! We started in not so sunny San Francisco (the best bit was visiting Alcatraz). And then onto Vegas which was out of this world and one massive party! And ended up in LA, which was all about soaking up the sun and celeb hunting (I didn’t see any, but I do have some very interesting snaps of Jennifer Aniston, Simon Cowell and Orlando Bloom’s front gates if you’re interested?)

What was your best meal?

I’m embarrassed to say but it was actually in a Greek restaurant on Long Beach – you see we’re not to dissimilar to you Brits, us Greeks will always sniff out the lamb kebabs.

I also became a little obsessed with their pancakes for breakfast. Everyday I ordered a short stack buttermilk pancake with maple syrup and bacon (very yummy, but thank goodness I don’t live there as I would be HUGE, it was near to impossible to find anything that resembled fresh fruit or veg).

What’s the one thing you have done on a holiday that would most shock us?

Being the good Greek girl that I am, I didn’t do anything that risqué or shocking. But I did take a liking to Harley’s and spent most of the time travelling around LA on one (on the back that is, there’s no ways I could control one of those big, bad boys).

How would you explain PR in three sentences to Steve Earls’ 4-year old?

We tell stories. And we try to make them as exciting as possible (which can sometimes be hard) so when we tell all the big bosses who work at the newspapers, magazines, TV and with computers they like them so much that they tell the whole wide world (well not always the whole world, sometimes just Basingstoke).

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title would be?

Good Greek Girls Don’t Exist

Why are manholes round?

Well it’s pretty common knowledge that round tubes are the strongest and most material-efficient shape against the compression of the earth around them. And obviously we all already know that it also needs to be round as human beings have a roughly circular cross-section.

Whilst reading an article on ‘Office Etiquette’ in this week’s Stylist magazine, I had a little chuckle to myself as I remembered a recent embarrassing moment at work . . .

My ‘cringe’ moment took place a couple of weeks ago, when I walked into a client meeting and goodness knows what came over me but I lent in for a smacker with one of the two clients (a double smacker whilst grasping onto both shoulders – Mediterranean style). As I was kissing him, a little voice in my head screamed ‘what am I doing? Boll*cks, I have to know kiss the other one so he doesn’t feel left out!’

Many of you are probably wondering ‘what’s really cringing about that? I always kiss my clients when we meet’. I partly agree, I do have clients which always kiss on hellos and goodbyes, but they’re typically ‘PR dahling’ types, these two clearly weren’t by the crimson coloured cheeks and wide-eyed look on their faces.

This was the tenth meeting over the course of 12 months, and I had never kissed them on any of these previous occasions, so why start now? I then spent the next hour of the meeting sweating about how to handle their departure, ‘as I’ve kissed once, do I kiss again? Will they expect it from now on?’

I didn’t, I stuck out my hand (abruptly) and sighed with relief as we were now back on familiar ground – the good old handshake.

Reeling with confusion after my illicit encounter, I approached one of our MD’s, Steve Earl and asked ‘to kiss or not to kiss?’ His response was simply ‘if they pay seven figures they get tongue’.

If only the guide to office etiquette had been published earlier!
