Derren Brown lottery prediction: wisdom of crowds or split screen trickery?

Derren Brown claimed to apply the wisdom of crowds and a variety of psychological techniques to correctly predict the lottery numbers on Wednesday evening.

It was an audacious stunt and I wanted to believe that it was true. Don’t we all want to believe in magic?

But it wasn’t magic. The most popular theory being discussed online is that it was the result of split screen production techniques. The apparent success of Brown’s group of 24 people to almost guess previous results added legitimacy to the exercise.

But how Brown did it doesn’t really matter. He has secured blanket coverage across TV, radio and national media. And I bet lottery sales are up today.
