East Coast trials web tickets

Self-ticketing via the web could be about to arrive for train travellers. The technology has been available to air travellers for more than a decade.

Train travellers that book tickets on East Coast now have the option of printing their own ticket as part of a trial, rather than it being sent by post or collecting it from a station.

Ticket inspectors on the East Coast line say web tickets will be rolled our nationwide if the trial proves successful.

Update: Further to Ged’s comment (see below) I spotted an optical scanner built into the the ticket barrier at Newcastle station.

    Finally.

Even Legoland does self-ticketing. It’s daft to have to queue for vending machines that all-too-often break down anyway.

  2. Ged Carroll says:

Does that mean we will have optical and RFID readers rather than the magnetic strip readers that jam in future? Good for everyone surely?
