International not local is future of viable free-to-view media

The March ABC data shows incredible monthly and yearly rises online for The Guardian and Daily Mail. Guardian Online grew 10.67% per cent in March to 49.2 million compared to a 16.50% rise for Mail Online to 65.9 million.

Both publications are chasing large audiences to make their ad funded models viable. They have each cracked the domestic UK market and as PaidContent reported last week both have the US market in their sights.

If free-to-view digital media is to have a future it’s a numbers game and the US market is the obvious market opportunity. The early indication from today’s ABC numbers is that it’s a strategy that is working for now.

One strategy that hasn’t unfortunately worked has been The Guardian’s UK hyper local web sites which The Guardian has said it is winding down. The sites in Cardiff, Edinburgh and Leeds run by professional journalists generated loyal followings but not revenues.

I’ve long been a fan of hyper local media but without a viable income model its future isn’t looking good.

August ABC data tells story of online media strategies

The latest ABC Multiplatform report, tracking the fortunes of the national media online and in print over the last 12-months, was published last week. Here are the headlines:

  • The report continues the narrative of a decline in print audiences and the corresponding rise in digital audiences
  • All print publications have experienced falls in readership ranging from The Daily Telegraph (-17.33 per cent) to the Daily Mail (-0.03 per cent)
  • The various online strategies (ads, affiliate marketing, paywall, SEO and sponsored content) of each national media publisher are visibly playing out month-on-month in the ABC reports. This blog post describes the various different strategies
  • The online properties for The Financial Times, The Times and The Sun, have all come out of the ABC audit as a result of firewalls
  • All other online properties have seen a rise in traffic in the past 12-months with MailOnline reporting 51 per cent year-on-year to 45 millions viewers per month

August ABCs: further falls for print

The ABC circulation figures for the national print media in August and in and with the exception of the Daily Mail, its drama across the board with year-on-year falls.

Here are the headlines.

  • Six national newspapers have suffered double-digit falls in print circulation
  • The circulation of The Times fell below 500,000 for the first time
  • The Daily Mail held-up strongest with a fall of less than 0.1 per cent
  • Stripping out bulk circulation (copies distributed by third-parties such as airports and hotels, typically for free) has exaggerated the downward trend for many publications

There’s further analysis here in Press Gazette and here is the data in full.

Declining circulation is a fixture for newsprint

The decline in newsprint is no longer a media story – its fixture of the industry.

The ABC Multi-Platform Report for May 2010 published today continues the sorry tale of the declining circulation of both daily and Sunday national newspapers in the UK.

Here’s a summary of the data.

ABC Multi-Platform March report: paywalls are coming; bulks out

The ABC Multi-Platform numbers are in for March and continue the narrative of a declining print media. But that’s not the whole story.

Print is down year-on-year. All the broadsheets, with the exception of The Financial Times (-6.41 per cent) report double digit percentage falls year-on-year. But the decline is due at least in part to newspapers stripping out bulk distribution (deals where papers are distributed free to customers at outlets such as airlines and hotels).

Here’s Roy Greenslade writing in the Guardian:

“Are there reasons to be cheerful about another set of newspaper circulation statistics that, at face value, look as depressing as ever? Well, one definite plus is that the figures are getting “cleaner” by the month. The gradual retreat by several titles from the use of bulk sales is one of the major causes of apparently bad year-on-year falls.”

News International has pulled its online titles (thesun.co.uk and thetimes.co.uk) from the scrutiny of the auditor ahead of the launch of thetimes.co.uk paywall in June.

MailOnline pursuing its celebrity-Google-baiting agenda is the fastest growing online property, and largest by audience, followed by guardian.co.uk.

Here’s the detail.
