You can’t cheat a network

This snippet from the Daily Telegraph’s City Column has been circulating around the PR community on Twitter since it was published last Friday.

Spinning so fast you lose all sense of REALITY

A company called Seventy Seven has just launched an online poll to decide on the PR agency of the year.

“Who would YOU make the agency of the year …?” the company asks (capital letters are not mine), and then adds this proviso. “If you can AVOID voting for your own agency it might make it a bit more interesting.”

What happened? A PR company called Cake immediately got 57pc of the vote.

Here’s the original post on the Seventy Seven blog.

Networks are open and can be manipulated but the social element means that it is almost impossible to cheat a network. Rogue behaviour can quickly be identified and outed.

Network addiction

My name is Stephen. I’m an addict. I can’t do anything anymore without logging on to the internet and sharing it with one of my social networks. It’s invading my life.

But I’m not alone. Go to a gig, visit a tourist attraction, head to a gallery, or go for a walk in the park, and you’ll spot folk not enjoying the experience directly, but snapping images to share online or Tweet.

Last time  I caught up with Phil Sheldrake he made the point that in time we’ll have a network for every aspect of our life, much like there are retail outlets and magazines that cover all areas of human interest.

Many of us have already reached this point.  Maybe its time to log off and engage and enjoy real life a bit more.

Flickr crowdsourced image remix

Networks are creating the means for people to collaborate as never before. In this case completely unknowingly.

OnetalkBelongMe remixed my photo of an old farm shed posted on Flickr yesterday and Chanzezar’s stunning image of a fantasy flower to create this conceptual image.

I’ve never met OnetalkBelongMe or Chanzezare but I’m flattered and hugely enthuased to have been involved in this simple collaboration.
