Reading is such an important part of what we do every day, often without even realising, and it’s a passion that is important to pass on to the next generation. That’s the fundamental aim of World Book Day, where people dress up as their favourite book character. It’s also the focus of our work with our charity partner, Ablaze.
Supporting the local community and fundraising is important to every business, but in our industry, time is money so it’s the most valuable thing that we can donate. And at Speed, we’re given the opportunity to take an hour out of our working week to spend time reading with primary school children through our charity partner, Ablaze.
Ablaze is helping address the challenge of illiteracy within Bristol primary schools by pairing children who need extra support with a volunteer reading buddy. This sees reading buddies at Speed taking time out of the office and stepping into another world for an hour to help Ablaze make a real difference to children struggling with their reading and comprehension skills. It helps them build their confidence, develop and, by reading with people passionate about storytelling, reading and words, can really make a difference to a child’s desire to read.
It’s not an opportunity given by many employers or charities – to take yourself out of your comfort zone and try out a completely different role to help support local children. And the Speed Read team is proud to have seen first-hand how each Ablaze hour makes a real difference, with our buddies reading becoming more fluent, and new words being sounded out and understood.
World Book Day (5 March 2020) aims to make story-sharing a lifetime habit and create readers for life, and this year, the campaign is starting a reading revolution to share a million stories. It’s easy to pledge a story on the website, and this week Speed will be adding six stories to the campaign through our work with Ablaze.
Taking the time to support the local community and nurture a love of reading in the next generation goes beyond a bake sale into something meaningful, and at Speed, thanks to our charity partner Ablaze, we get the opportunity to make a real difference.
In the words of Dr Seuss, “You can find magic wherever you look. Sit back and relax, all you need is a book”, so sit back, grab a book and add your story to the World Book Day pledge counter here: https://www.worldbookday.com/
