Why mentoring matters

At Speed we are actively involved in a lot of different programmes and initiatives that support future talent growth in the communications industry.

One of the programmes we support is UWE Bristol’s Equity Mentoring. This is a forward-looking programme, aimed at unlocking talent through building BAME students with the confidence, skills and networks to succeed in their chosen career.

Each year, a member of our senior team is matched with a student to mentor them to unlock the skills and support to go on and do great things.

In 2019, I had the pleasure of acting as a mentor to Cidella, a Fashion Communications student with a huge ambition and passion to build a foundation that would set her up for a future in the fashion industry.

During our four month mentorship we worked on building Cidella’s confidence to seek out opportunities and find ways to make sure she stood out from the crowd. Cidella also worked out of the Speed office, and was even involved in a live pitch meeting – really putting her confidence to the test whilst bolstering her communication skills.

By the end of the mentoring, Cidella had secured two internships which has set her up work experience at London Fashion Week – pretty much the biggest box tick you could ask for when entering a career in the fashion industry.

And what’s more, Cidella has just won the UWE Equity Programme’s Mentee of the Year, a huge accolade that will live on her CV as she grows into her career post-graduation.

And this is why we really believe mentoring matters.
