Speed’s 100k for Ablaze challenge

Speed 100k for Ablaze

Since the first UK national lockdown in March 2020, children from the most disadvantaged families have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic in terms of their mental health, social development and their ability to access education and wider support.

Speed Communications’ chosen charity, Ablaze exists to tackle inequality of opportunity for young people in the West of England region. To help fund their work, a team of Speedsters will track a collective 100k on the 19 and 20 June, the last weekend before lockdown restrictions are due to lift in England. To make the event as accessible as possible, the team will be running, walking and swimming the distance to meet their own personal fitness challenges, ranging from 5 to 20k.

What’s the issue?

Recent estimates show that over 70 million children worldwide will not acquire basic literacy skills by their 10th birthday in 2021, a critical milestone at which children transition from ‘learning to read’ to ‘reading to learn’. This has been exacerbated by the impact of Covid-19.

In the UK, government figures indicate that 200,000 students in their final year of primary school now face the reality of starting secondary school with low literacy: an increase of 30,000 students over the past year. The Sutton Trust’s Learning in Lockdown report (Jan 2021) also revealed that 84% of teachers believe COVID-19 has further widened the attainment gap between pupils from different social backgrounds.

What are we doing to help?

We believe that effective communication skills, including basic literacy and the ability to speak with confidence, are crucial to improving children and young people’s opportunities in life. As a Bristol-based company, we also have a responsibility to support the young people in our community.

Alongside our regular school volunteer reading scheme, money raised from the Speed 100k will help fund Ablaze to continue utilising the skills and commitment of business volunteers to:

  • raise young people’s confidence and aspiration;
  • support their attainment and skill levels and
  • empower them with knowledge to make informed choices about their future.
